Howdy!
I am a software engineer at Cisco Systems. I work within Cryptographic Services, where my team develops and maintains custom Java public key infrastructure applications utilized across the company. Generally, my work interests include information security and privacy, applied cryptography, and software engineering (with an emphasis on low-level languages, such as C). I have experience in a variety of languages beyond Java and C, but for better or worse I don't find there's many opportunities to use Haskell or similar languages in a professional setting :)
In the past, I was a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, where I worked under Ian Goldberg. My research focused on designing and adapting privacy enhancing technologies to be used by people who don't have strong representation within STEM. Particularly, I designed and implemented an anonymous reputation system to be used within tight-knit internet communities. The system that I designed (PRSONA) can be seen here, and its formal write up can be found here. Previous research of mine can be found here (SoK: Privacy-Preserving Reputation Systems) and here (Do You Feel a Chill?: Using PIR against Chilling Effects for Censorship-resistant Publishing).
In my admittedly sparse free time, I like to read and write. Science fiction has long been a close interest of mine, though the set of genres that I find myself invested in is all over the map. Good recent reads: The Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe), Animal Man (Grant Morrison), and "The Trouble with Wilderness; or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature" (William Cronon).
If you want to contact me, I typically use the username tmgurtler at various places. Email works best (tmgurtler AT protonmail DOT com). At this point, I am not active on any social media (I have no Facebook account, and I have not checked my Twitter account in, I believe, several years). I do love to chat, though -- if you reach out, just make sure to let me know where you found my contact info!
